BOULDER, Colo., May 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- ION Engineering, a leading carbon capture technology company, today announced that it has appointed Erik Meuleman, PhD as Chief Technology Officer.

Dr. Meuleman will lead ION's global Research and Development function and play a key role in shaping ION's technology roadmap. Most recently he served as Research Team Leader at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) Australia, where he oversaw innovative technology development in the area of CO2 capture and played a key role in establishing CSIRO's capability as a world leader on post-combustion capture of CO2.

"Dr. Meuleman is a leading researcher in industrial gas separations, whose nearly two decades of professional experience have placed him at the vanguard of post combustion CO2 capture projects. Dr. Meuleman, bolstered by his expertise, research, and innovations in the field, has led teams in efforts to find environmentally sound solutions to the concerns about CO2 pollution," said Alfred (Buz) Brown, PhD, ION's founder, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman.

Prior to Dr. Meuleman's work at CSIRO he led original contributions in the fields of waste water treatment, pure water production and organics separation using hybrid membrane-based separation processes at Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) in The Netherlands. He combined relevant membrane processes with grinded ion exchange resins, distillation or evaporation. His efforts also focused on recycling of supercritical CO2 and CO2 capture from synthesis gas, natural gas and down-hole operations. He led various Dutch and European research consortiums including companies, universities and institutes.

In 2008, Dr. Meuleman, began work with the CSIRO in Australia, in support of becoming the world's best in Post-combustion Capture of CO2 (PCC) and thereby securing the vast coal resources. He led PCC projects in the State of Victoria and was instrumental in leading collaborations between industry, academia, research institutes and government agencies with the aim of obtaining sustainable use and growth of coal-fired power production. His collaboration work led to the establishment of an academic research group, now carrying out world-leading research in the area of MEA-based PCC where he continues to serve as an adjunct professor since 2014. During the 7 years at CSIRO, Dr. Meuleman gained significant experience utilizing innovative liquid absorbent systems in CSIRO's three pilot plants through collaborations with the USA, EU, Japan and China-based parties. He's a member of the organizing committees of the bi-annual International Symposium on Sustainable Use of Low Rank Coal and The Clearwater Clean Coal Conference.

"I believe in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) as a relatively inexpensive technology that offers reliable, secure and clean energy for decades to come. Based on my experience I believe that ION's Solvent and Process Technology provides the best available solution whether it be focused on low cost to build or cost to operate. I'm very excited to lead ION Engineering into the next decade as one of world's leaders in PCC/CCS," said Dr. Meuleman.

About ION Engineering
ION Engineering is commercializing novel, proprietary solvent and process technology for removal of CO2 from large point sources including natural gas and coal-fired power plants more efficiently than current commercial solutions. ION's CO2 capture technology outperforms other available technologies while significantly reducing both capital and operating costs. ION is currently working with local and global partners to test its carbon capture technology with flue gas in commercial settings. Following the large scale pilot testing anticipated in 2016, the Company is targeting a larger commercial demonstration project beginning in late 2017.
